CAVE is working in collaboration with
Monica Blake and the Wiltshire Wildlife Trust to launch a campaign to
reduce the amount of plastic bags currently used in the area. Melksham
Climate Friendly Group is also campaigning to reduce plastic bags, and
we have since discovered that other towns across Wiltshire are keen
to get involved.
As a result, CAVE and Melksham groups
are planning a Plastic Bag Amnesty Day on Saturday 20th
September and it is hoped that many other Wiltshire towns will join
us.
The aim of the day is to raise awareness
about alternatives to plastic bags, and to reduce the amount of new
plastic bags issued. We plan to provide recycling bins on the day for
people to hand in their old plastic carrier bags for appropriate disposal,
and various bags for life will be available.
There are lots of ways for people to
take part or contribute to this campaign. If you would like to get involved
or have any comments or ideas, please get in touch:Vicky Welsh on 01249
706 446 or e-mail vwelsh@northwilts.gov.uk.
We are a friendly and informal group,
always pleased to welcome new faces at our meetings which take place
in the meeting room above The Bear Hotel, Market Place, Chippenham.
Do come along to our next meeting, on
Wednesday 23rd July.
CAVE would like to thank St Marys School
for hosting the Fairtrade Discovery Evening on 6th May, and
thanks also to all of those who attended.
It was a very enjoyable evening with
the opportunity to try various Fairtrade products.
Entries to the Fairtrade competition are now being judged, and the winner
will be announced at the end of July.
Nick & Colette have formed a Fairtrade
Committee, and will be attending a Town Council meeting. The committee
will plan and schedule future events and progress the campaign. Ideas
include a Fairtrade Fashion Show, and a Fairtrade dinner.
In the meantime, we would be grateful
for your help identifying workplaces in Chippenham that offer Fairtrade
tea/coffee/refreshments. Please let us know if your place of work is
supporting Fairtrade by getting in touch with Colette.
CAVE has been awarded £2419 by North Wiltshire District Council for the Fairtrade’s Campaign and the Plastic Bag Campaign!
A BIG THANK YOU to Nick Murry for putting the application for the Community Funding Award together (in a very short space of time) and to Colette Som for attending the meeting when the applications were being considered. Nick was on holiday so not available to attend, and the Committee does sometimes have questions, so it’s important to have a representative on hand. As it happens, there were no questions, the Councillors were very happy to support CAVE’s projects.
Very pleasing that CAVE’s efforts have been recognised - well done everyone!
